Workshop on Industrial ProblemsThe Workshop on Industrial Problems  is run by the Applied Mathematics groups of the 3 Galician universities (members of the CESGA node)  under the recently finished Consolider Ingenio Mathematica (i-MATH) project.  These groups, members of the Spanish Network for Mathematics and Industry (Red math-in), are consolidating their efforts to transfer technology to industry and the productive sector through the  Technological Institute of Industrial Mathematics (ITMATI).

The workshop, funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness),  started as a platform to generate innovative solutions to business and industry in any public, private or social sector.
The aim of the Workshop is to stimulate the relationship between mathematics and industry, promoting and facilitate interaction between both.

If you wish to collaborate in the workshop you can either do it, by attending the sessions or providing us with a real case study from your company or institution. For either of the options, please register in the following form.

Date and venue

The Workshop on Industrial Problems will be held from 11th September 2012 to 22nd July 2013 in the 3 Galician universities:

  • Aula de Informática 5, Facultad de Matemáticas. Universidade de Santiago de Compostela.
  • Seminario 2.1, Facultad de Informática. Universidade da Coruña.
  • Laboratorio LD07, E.I. Telecomunicación (Edificio nuevo). Universidade de Vigo.

Aim of the workshop

The workshop is based on the following points:

  • To show the mathematical technology and experience gained within the research groups and technology centres.
  • To search for solutions by experts on mathematical technology as an innovative element for companies.
  • To update the groups research lines, adapting them to the demands from businesses.
The workshop seeks to form working groups, industry professionals and researchers in the applied mathematics field and analyze the problems encountered by employers in various industries sectors. In this way, you get a list of problems of industrial or scientific interest to be treated by experts in mathematical engineering. The success of the workshop lays in the fact that the participating companies, researchers and students work together solving a problem.

Mathematical solutions to the problems

The solutions are based on the development of numerical methods and their use in simulation technology to design and control industrial products and processes. In industry, the tools of CAD (Computer Aided Design) and CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) reduce prototyping costs, laboratory experimentation, and a considerable reduction in time-to-market for new products. This workshop will implement these mathematical techniques and seeks to find new applications that can be used.

Schedule and work process

This workshop is organized in 10 sessions. In the first eight, companies present their problems. Then there is a period in which mathematical experts and participants work on solutions to these problems using the most suitable mathematical methods for each case. Finally, conclusions are drawn and presented during the last two sessions. Participants gain experience in working directly with companies, which will provide valuable knowledge in their professional future, while an innovative point of view applicable to their daily work.

Target

The Workshop on Industrial Problems seeks to spread the culture of innovation through the use of mathematical technology in the industry. It targets:

  • Professionals from various industrial areas (technical business)
  • Business
  • Educational professionals (high school)
  • University graduates (students and staff research scientist)

Training recognition

Agreements will be signed with different Masters in Mathematical Industry so young people can attend and profit from their education.

This activity is recognized by the Master in Mathematical Engineering organized by the three Galician universities: http://www.dma.uvigo.es/master/
