Industrial Mathematics Day in Congress of the Real Sociedad Matemática Española

On January 24 was held at the Faculty of Mathematics, University of Santiago de Compostela session Aspects of Industrial Mathematics in Spain within the Congress of the Royal Spanish Mathematical Society (RSME), whose promoters are Technological Institute of Industrial Mathematics (ITMATI) Mathematics and Spanish Network - Industry (math-in). This session is focused on the evolution experienced by the industrial mathematics in Spain in recent years, through various partnerships maintained between research groups in Mathematics and different companies and institutions both nationally and internationally.

The session began with a presentation by Peregrina Quintela, President of the Spanish Network Mathematics - Industry, two new facilities to enhance technology transfer to industry mathematics arising as a result of Consolider Project Ingenio Mathematica (i-MATH):

  • math-in, allowing better coordination between different research groups involved, join forces and leverage resources and tools for the mutual benefit of all members, through joint strategic planning and development of new methodologies and collaborative work processes.
  • ITMATI, which aims to consolidate the pole of Industrial Mathematics in Galicia, significantly increase the existing collaboration with business, and provide a qualitative and quantitative measurable in terms of business investment in R&D&i.

In a second part, there have been eight cases of success that illustrate the ability of mathematics at the time of providing innovative solutions to the demands and needs raised from different sectors of economic activity:

  1. The problem of noise and dithering in the images captured by mobile phones. Bartomeu Coll, Universitat de Les Illes Balears.
  2. Simulation of tsunamis generated by submarine avalanches.  Carlos Parés, Universidad de Málaga.
  3. Numerical simulation in hot forming processes in the metallurgical industry. Fernando Varas, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.
  4. Some examples of mathematical transfer to the financial sector. Carlos Vázquez, Universidade da Coruña.
  5. Case Study on the quality control environment and multidimensional processes. Alberto Ferrer, Universidad Politécnica de Valencia.
  6. Statistical Consulting in the university: Statistics Applied of the UAB. Llorent Badiella, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
  7. Success story in the field of environmental data modeling. Manuel Febrero, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela.
  8. Design and diagnosis of the impurity content in aviation fuel. Salvador Naya, Universidade da Coruña.

To end the day, discussed the current challenges of the Industrial Mathematics in a panel consisting of leading researchers in mathematical technology transfer to business:
