Academic coordinators

Alfredo Bermúdez de Castro López-Varela

Affiliated Researcher of ITMATI and Promoter of this Centre.Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Santiago de Compostela and coordinator of the research group in “Mathematical Engineering” (mat+i), obtained his PhD in Mathematics by the same university in 1974. He has directed or co-directed 29 doctoral theses and published over a hundred articles in journals of impact in his field (171 entries in MathScinet). He has been the PI in 40 research projects and more than 100 technology transfer contracts. From September 2006 to October 2010 he was the Coordinator of the Technology Transfer area at the National Agency of Evaluation and Prospective (ANEP). He held the position of vice-rector at the University of Santiago de Compostela from 1994-1990. He currently is a member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences and in 1997 he was awarded its annual prize. Since August 2012, he is co-chair of the Scientific Committee of the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM). In 2019 he obtained the Enrique Vidal Abascal Medal from the Royal Galician Academy of Sciences corresponding to the section of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Sciences, for his recognition by the international scientific community as a key figure in the development of its discipline in Spain , and his pioneering role in bridging mathematics and industry.

Samuele Rubino

Samuele Rubino is a professor in the department of Differential Equations and Numerical Analysis at University of Seville and collaborator of the Institute of Mathematics. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 2014 from the University of Seville and won the Award for the best Ph.D. thesis on computational methods in applied sciences and engineering from the Spanish Society of Applied Maths. He was a Post-Doc Fellow of “Fondation Sciences Mathématiques de Paris” in 2015, affiliated to Laboratory Jacques-Louis Lions, and Post-Doc Fellow of the program “Initiative d’Excellence de l’Université de Bordeaux” in 2016, affiliated to Mechanics and Engineering Institute. In 2017 he won a contract “Juan de la Cierva-Incorporación” of the Spanish State Research Agency and came back to University of Seville. His research mainly centers on numerical analysis of stabilized and turbulence models in fluid mechanics, with a particular focus on reduced order modeling.

Isabel Serra Mochales

Isabel Serra holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics. She is a researcher in the Complex Systems Group at Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) and in the CAOS group at BSC. She is dedicated to the transfer of statistical and mathematical knowledge and is thus developed as Head of the Knowledge and Technology Transfer Unit in CRM. Her main line of research within mathematics is the Extreme Value Theory and her scientific interest is focused on the study of Complex Systems. She has worked on several interdisciplinary projects and has published in journals from different fields. She proposed several techniques for improving the theoretical results in extreme value theory for statistical modelling in several real frames of application: finance, environmental, enginyering… Her junior postdoctoral stage was carried out in Centre de Recerca Matemàtica on physical statistic problems. Overall, academic trajectory was combined with several collaborations in projects with private and public institution.
